What Causes Grey Hair

Like fine lines, grey hairs are a visible sign of the ageing process. Unfortunately it’s all part of life.

But what ist that starts the whole grey hair thing off?

Interested? Here’s what you need to know…

50% of the population has 50% grey at the age of 50, dermatologists call this the 50-50-50 rule.

Does Stress make you grey?

Stress seems to play a role. Stress won’t cause you to go grey however stress is implicated in a lot of hair and skin problems.

what causes grey hair

When do most people go grey? And Why do we get grey hairs in the fist place?

Well, your hair basically bleaches itself! You may be familiar with hydrogen peroxide as a way to go blonde, but it’s also the way we go gray. According to a 2009 study published by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, hydrogen peroxide naturally occurs in our hair follicles, and as we get older, it builds up. This build-up blocks the production of melanin, a.k.a. our hair’s pigment.

Is it possible to slow down getting grey hair?

A multivitamin supplement such as Seven Seas Perfect7 contains Omega-3s, which prevent the hair from being dry and lifeless as they have a moisturising effect which can also reduce itching and flaking dandruff. The supplement also contains copper, which is known to prevent the onset of greying hair by boosting the production of melanin (the pigment that gives hair colour).

Is grey hair more common in some people than others?

Well your ethnicity makes a difference. Red heads go grey the earliest of all followed by Caucasians then Asians. Then African-Americans, however scientists haven’t figured out why yet.

“It doesn’t matter if your hair is short, long or curly

The haircut is the most important thing about any hairstyle and sometimes this is overlooked.

I see so many hairdressers focusing on hair colour and not thinking through the hairstyle.

The haircut should be the right balance for your face shape and cut so that it makes your hair easy to manage.”
